Though some areas need work, the accents of the lead characters are all over the place. They seemed to have picked up whatever rural accent they were comfortable with, and rolled with it. Jitendra who hails from Rajasthan, even let an ‘apan’ slip, a go-to personal pronoun rampant in the region, but it is not really heard in UP.

All said and done, there is a road bump ahead. Panchayat isn’t exactly an inferno that builds up into something. It’s more like a slow burning flame that towards the end might sputter and extinguish without much fanfare. It might get a little drab once the novelty of all that’s fun and good wears off. It gets a little pedantic then, which might drive away some people. But I don’t see that as some major dealbreaker; I kind of expected it all throughout, so this was better.

Panchayat does not go for dramatic moments that would bring in drastic changes in the arc of any of its characters. Raghuvir Yadav is such a pleasure to watch and he nails the accent, body language and minute facial expressions so well, you forget it’s an actor playing a part. Jitendra Kumar is forced to spend too much time looking clueless which starts getting a tad repetitive after a while.

The world of Phulera is etched out in all its provincial hues by Amitabh Singh’s innovative camerawork with plenty of high angle shots, Anurag Saikia’s lively background score, Tarpan Shrivastava’s meticulous production design and Priyadarshini Muzumdar’s costumes.
